EthioChicken is commercializing improved poultry breeds and high quality feed in smallholder markets in Ethiopia. Poultry breeding represents an important opportunity for improved nutrition and increased incomes for smallholder farmers, but lack of access to more productive breeds and reliable feed and vaccines often prevents farmers from taking advantage of this opportunity. By expanding its network of rural sales agents and introducing improved breeds to the market, EthioChicken is creating business opportunities for sales agents and farmers in rural areas.

Impact: During the partnership, EthioChicken far exceeded its targets by selling 3.2 million day-old chicks to 640,000 smallholder farmers. The improved breeds produce more than four times as many eggs per year and grow to be 250 percent larger than local breeds in the first three months. EthioChicken also recruited and trained 450 new rural sales agents.
