Hawaii-based Moana Technologies is introducing specific pathogen free (SPF) black tiger shrimp broodstock through MKA Hatchery in Bangladesh. The SPF stock will increase farm productivity by nearly 70 percent and earn a premium of close to 30 percent for small shrimp growers. It will also reduce pressure on wild shrimp populations in the Bay of Bengal, which is the current source of broodstock. The Bangladesh Shrimp and Fish Foundation is training hatchery owners and overland transporters in safe handling practices to reduce the incidence of disease.
Outcome: Furnishing SPF shrimp broodstock to private hatcheries in Bangladesh will produce more than 50 million larvae and increase the productivity of 1,000 smallholder farmers.
